At an early age, I was star struck by legendary circus performers who made Sarasota their winter home. Talented artisans like the legendary clown Lou Jacobs who brought laughs to generations of families and his daughter Dolly Jacobs who continues to take my breath away as she soars above on beautiful silks in Circus Sarasota. When I heard that the Cirque du Soleil was coming to town at the Amalie Arena, I had to be there.
Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing Varekai – my first Cirque du Soleil performance. Almost immediately, I was transported back to my childhood as I watched two clowns interact with audience members before the show began. I laughed along with my daughter at their playful antics and felt memories forming before my eyes. The lights dimmed, the music began, and colorful costumed characters emerged from portals in the stage floor. The magic was brewing! Aerialists dance thirty feet off the ground and land with the grace of a bird. Acrobats spin, flip, and twist in ways I could never imagine as I hold my breath hoping for their safe landings. Breathtaking is an understatement! Just offstage, the orchestra keeps the pulse of the show moving as onstage singers accompany incredible feats of strength, grace, and whimsy.
The old world circus arts are alive and well in the hands of these incredible performers. The next time you hear that the Cirque is coming to town, buy tickets for your family. The magic is contagious!
