National Teddy Bear Day: Celebrate at Build-a-Bear this Weekend!

Be honest. Look on your bed, on the nightstand, or maybe even on a dresser or in the closet. Did you see a teddy bear? A stuffed animal you’ve had for so long you may have forgotten its name but never the memories?

Stuffed animals are cherished by people in all stages of life, from young children to teenagers to adults. It’s no surprise then that more than half of adults would have answered “yes” to that question. Build-A-Bear Workshop released survey results showing that 53% of the adults surveyed admitted to owning a stuffed animal, with 56% of those having owned these bears for over two decades. And of these, 72% said they plan to keep their stuffed animals forever!

Clinical psychologist and New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Shefali Tsbari, describes stuffed animals as “icon(s) of comfort, mitigating potential feelings of uncertainty as we transition into a new life stage.” Teddy bears are pretty much universally accepted as items of comfort for children, but they can also be that for adults.

Besides comfort, teddy bears are also great for security. According to the survey commissioned by Build-A-Bear, 40% of respondents sleep with stuffed animals at their sides. Of those, men and women alike reported to sleeping with a them for security purposes. In fact, more men than women admitted to this.
