Want to Avoid Big Crowds? Here are our favorite kid-friendly spots to visit in Tampa Bay

By Laura Byrne

Florida is a tourism hot spot–the attractions, beaches and lively cities are probably what attracted you to the Tampa Bay Area in the first place.

But, sometimes you just want a little bit more space and head somewhere that’s a little less people-y.

We get it! Here are some of our favorite spots to take the kids when you want to avoid major crowds, but still get out and about in Tampa Bay!

Local Parks:

Go for a hike on a nature trail! Wheedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg and Lettuce Lake Park in Tampa are some popular parks among families.

Here’s a great resource for hiking trails in Tampa Bay!

Bring a picnic basket and plenty of water for an all day adventure among nature and in the shade of beautiful trees!

ZooTampa and Busch Gardens:

*Busch Gardens will be closing through the end of March starting on Monday, March 16 out of an abundance of caution due to coronavirus.

Okay, so technically these are big attractions that often attract crowds, but if you avoid the rides, there is plenty of outdoor and open space to wander and look at the animals.

Go for a boat ride:

Pirate Water Taxi

We’re still outside here! One way to take in the great outdoors on the water is by boat like the Pirate Water Taxi in Tampa. It doesn’t get overly crowded, so you’ll have plenty of personal space for your family.

Dinosaur World:

We know, we know. This is another attraction, but it’s all outdoors, so there’s plenty of space to keep your distance as you wander the trail and search for dinosaurs.

Go to the Beach:

fun places in Tampa Bay that aren't crowded

Aim to visit the less crowded beaches like Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island. In general, most beaches in our area allow you at least six feet of space from the peeps over on the next towel.

Go Fossil Hunting!

The Tampa Bay Fossil Club is a great resource for fossil hunting in Tampa Bay. Popular spots include the Peace River and Venice Beach which has been deemed the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World“!

Head to a U-Pick Farm

Inhale all of the fresh air and take in the sun’s rays as you and the kids hunt for the best strawberries, sweetest oranges and greenest veggies! There are so many unique farms in Tampa Bay to discover! We’re sharing some favorite spots here! Be sure to check with each farm’s website or social media pages as u-pick hours and days vary.
