Get out and have fun with the kids and find something FUN on our list of top picks of family-friendly things to do in Tampa Bay this holiday weekend! It’s a long weekend for many of you as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day on Monday. Take the time to get out and explore Tampa Bay as a family, check out Shark Days at The Florida Aquarium, take in a performance at the Straz, get creative with clay at the Morean Arts Center, and watch an MLK Day Parade! There are so many ways to connect as a family this weekend in Tampa Bay!

Mutiny at the Museum at Glazer Children’s Museum | All Month  Join the Glazer Children’s Museum throughout January as a pirate takeover delivers a month of fun, he-ARR-ty programs and pirate-themed décor for all mateys aboard in honor of Gasparilla. glazermuseum.org 

Gateways to the Caribbean: Mapping the Florida-Cuba Connection | Through January 2018, various times  See the Tampa Bay History Center’s current exhibit on display before it closes this month and learn about five centuries of connections and interaction between Florida and Cuba. Star Wars and the Power of Costume in St Pete | Through April 1, 2018 See the newest exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts when this Smithsonian traveling exhibition celebrating the iconic costumes from a galaxy far, far away comes to St. Pete. The exhibition launches for a special members-only weekend Nov. 11. Get a closer look at the costumes that shaped the identities of some of the film industry’s most famous sci-fi/fantasy characters from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader to the lavish bikini worn by Princess Leia. mfastpete.org Everyone

Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park | January 11-20  Celebrate the influences and contributions on African Americans at this year’s family-friendly festival at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa. Aesop’s Dinosaur Fable at Puppet World Playhouse in Dover | Jan. 11-13, various times Watch this unique fable come to life in a mammoth musical featuring nine-foot-tall, dancing, glow-in-the-dark puppets at Puppet World Playhouse in Dover. Based on “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” a classic story is transformed into a musical fable as an almanac predicts an ice storm to come blow away a community of dinosaurs. Friday Night Clay at Morean Arts Center | Jan. 12, 7-9 p.m.  Play in clay including wheel throwing or hand building at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Pete. Bring a towel, your favorite beverage and a sense of humor. All clay materials included. Guests select their favorite piece at the end of the class for it to be bisque and glazed, and picked up 2 weeks after class. Pre-registration is required for participants of all ages. Parents’ Night Out at Great Explorations | Jan. 12, 6-10 p.m. Drop the kids off for a night of fun at Great Explorations in St. Pete while you take some well-deserved time for yourself. On the second Friday each month, children can play in the museum, explore the Touch Tunnel, watch science shows and enjoy a G or light PG-rated movie. Pizza, snacks and juice are included. SkyWatch at MOSI | Jan. 13, 6:30-9:30 p.m.  Join the space experts at MOSI for an evening of space exploration as seen through the museum’s telescopes. SkyWatch stargazing events take place in the parking lot by the new MOSI entrance. This month, the winter sky bears its usual suspects including Orion Nebula, Sirius, Pleiades, Hyades and others. Monster Jam | Jan. 13, 7 p.m. Cheer your favorite male and female world-class drivers as they deliver adrenaline-charged, high-flying, four-wheel excitement to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. This year’s event will feature some of motorsports’ most popular drivers/trucks including Bounty Hunter driven by Jimmy Creten, Grave Digger with Charlie Pauken, Scarlet Bandit by Dawn Creten, and more. Great Connections at Great Explorations Children’s Museum | Jan. 14, 10 a.m. to noon  Experience Great Explorations and its exhibits with special early access hours made available to children with special needs and their families. Take part in sensory-friendly activities and crafts. This month, the museum partners with Blossom Therapies, an at-home therapy service for Alternative & Augmentative Communication, Autism Spectrum Disorder, general speech and language and IEP assistance.
