For many parents of children birth to age five, it can be overwhelming ensuring they are developmentally on track. You may feel your child is not developing at the same rate as other children. To ease your mind, know that developmental screenings are an effective way to assess a child’s development. They help parents recognize their child’s strengths, know what milestones to look for next, and determine whether a follow-up assessment is needed. Getting your child an early developmental screening is also an essential step towards identifying delay(s) in children in their early years before they start school.

Developmental Screenings are also available at no cost to children and families at the Children’s Board Family Resource Centers. Hearing and vision screenings are also offered. On Monday, Aug. 31, the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County hosted the virtual grand opening of the Doretha Wynn Edgecomb Children’s Board Family Resource Center in Temple Terrace. Doretha Wynn Edgecomb is a legendary Hillsborough County educator and former board chair of both the Hillsborough County Public Schools and Children’s Board. Over 100 of Ms. Edgecomb’s family members, friends, colleagues and classmates from all over the Country logged on to the Zoom webinar to thank her for the countless years of service she provided to children and families in Hillsborough County.
The 5,100-square-foot Doretha Wynn Edgecomb Chil-dren’s Board Family Resource Center is located at 5892 E. Fowler Ave. in the heart of Temple Terrace. This is one of seven centers strategically placed throughout Hillsborough County that offers universal services such as developmental playgroups, developmental screenings, health and safety education and well-child visits. These services will now be more accessible to the residents of Temple Terrace and the surrounding areas.
