Metropolitan Ministries prepares to serve 20,000 families this holiday season, Calls on the community to join the “hope countdown”
WHAT: The holidays are a joyous time, but not for families in need or homeless. No food to prepare. No gifts to be given. Metropolitan Ministries once again aims to change this for 20,000 Tampa Bay families for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and preparations are now underway.
WHY: No one should go without a Thanksgiving or Christmas if we can do something about it as a community. The need has grown (more than 18,000 families were helped in 2017) due to the elongated hardships of hurricanes Irma and Maria and lack of affordable housing for those living on a fixed income or low wages. During the months of October through December, the Ministries sees a 20% jump in those seeking services at our outreach family resource centers—that’s more than 3,000 families a month. This is in addition to those seeking holiday assistance.
CALL TO ACTION: Metropolitan Ministries needs the Tampa Bay community’s help. If we all come together, every one of our neighbors in need can have a holiday. The most needed nonperishable items are cereal, potatoes, rice, beans, yams, stuffing, and turkeys. Volunteer leaders are also needed. The Ministries asks the community to join their “hope countdown” campaign to serve those who are suffering with food boxes, hot meals, toys for children, and most of all HOPE.
WHEN: Registration for holiday assistance begins on October 10. The holiday tent opens on November 1 in Tampa/Hillsborough and on November 2 in Holiday/Pasco. The “hope countdown” is now through December 24, 2018.
