MOSI Celebrating 50th Anniversary of Moon Landing with Family-Friendly FUN

Tampa, Florida – MOSI celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing with STEM & STEAM activities as well as presentations by NASA Engineer Peter J. Chitko July 16th– July 21st. MOSI’s summer exhibit, ONE SMALL STEP – The Exhibition, is open to guests until September 3rd, 2019.

MOSI has the following activities planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing:

Tuesday, July 16

Global Rocket Launch
MOSI is an official site along with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, on a Global Rocket Launch to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. Throughout the worldwide event, rockets will be launched that count towards the Global Rocket Launch’s goal – to break a world record!
Location: One Small Step – The Exhibition / MOSI Science Park / IdeaZone
Time: 10 am until 4:30 pm

Thursday, July 18

Virtual Moonshot
Social media-based activity featuring the design, construction, and testing of lunar landers.
Location: One Small Step – The Exhibition
Time: 10 am until 4:30 pm

Friday, July 19

NASA’s Giant Leaps: Past and Future – Celebrating Apollo 50th as we Go Forward to the Moon
Video broadcast of space engineering activities and live broadcast of interviews with NASA experts. Broadcast Time: 1 until 3 pm
Location: One Small Step – The Exhibition
Activities Planned: Building a lunar lander, rocket launch and other space demonstrations
Activity Time: 10 am until 4:30

Apollo era artifacts in the ONE SMALL STEP Exhibit include:

  • The Pen Buzz Aldrin used to save the Apollo mission by usinf it inplace of a button that broke off the landing module
  • Replica space suit from the Apollo 11 mission
  • An actual Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC for short), one was in the Command Module and the other in the Lunar Module
  • Actual publications from the era announcing the accomplishment (Life, Time, National Geo, etc.
  • Complete living room set up with 1969 accurate furniture and fixtures
  • A moon rock. Actually a part of the moon here at MOSI
  • Actual smell of the moon
  • Games, hands on robotics, as well the ability to build and launch your own paper rocket
  • … and so much more!
