As a father, husband, son, brother and friend I have become intentionally focused on young children and families in need. Many of us have our basic needs met on a daily basis without much trauma or stress, so it can be challenging to place ourselves in other people’s shoes. As the executive director of the Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties, I make daily efforts to model and coach our staff to support and serve our children, their families, our provider community and one another with this in mind.

As we move into the holiday season, I will make daily efforts to support local organizations in several different ways. Any random act of kindness can cause a chain reaction that restores our faith in the human spirit. I was in the drive through at Starbucks a few weeks ago and the person in front of me bought my coffee. When I arrived at the window, the employee shared that I was the 16th person in a row to have their drink purchased by a stranger. Of course, I kept the streak alive and purchased the person’s order behind me. I don’t know if you’ve ever been a part of something like the example I am sharing but it warms the heart and provides us with hope when it happens.

If we all ask ourselves, how can I pay it forward today and do three nice things for people each day, the world would change for the better very quickly. One of the most impactful things that will occur is our children will begin to prioritize this in their lives. We are all teachers and should use the holiday season as a time to be purposeful for ourselves and our children. We can always find educational moments in our daily lives that provide motivation and purpose.

I hope you join me during this time of year and “Pay it Forward” to family, friends, co-workers and people you don’t even know. Together, we can work to make our community a better place.
