Henry B. Plant Museum: Picnic in the Park

By Brianna Althaus

Go back in time to the Gilded Age for a picnic in the park at the Henry B. Plant Museum on Sunday, March 1st. Starting at 10 am, you can immerse yourself in the Victorian era with games and entertainment that are reminiscent of the time period. Test your Victorian sporting prowess with challenges of hoops & sticks, croquet, horseshoes, badminton, and three-legged races. Victorian table games will be offered including dominoes, checkers, jacks or tiddlywinks. The picnic will also include strolling models in vintage clothing, live theater, and continuous entertainment on Center Stage. Enjoy the Tampa Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Lippe the Juggler, the Upstairs/Downstairs Live Theater, and many more.

In addition to live entertainment, community partners will offer crafts and activities. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay will be present at a table with some friendly dogs looking for a forever home. Visitors will be able to interact with the dogs. The Paper Seahorse will host Victorian paper crafting on the veranda. Join VSA Florida in an art activity accessible to all. Major Gusto will be patrolling the park throughout the day to ensure that the proper Victorian fun and frolic is observed. Towering above picnickers will be The Stilt Man, a veritable giant at over 9 feet tall!

The Henry B. Plant Museum will also be featuring a special $1 admission from noon-5 pm.

Snacks will also be available with complimentary Blue Bell Ice Cream and Popcorn courtesy of the museum. Two food trucks from Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally will have food available for purchase.

Picnic in the Park is a perfect opportunity to go back to the turn of the century and enjoy a simpler time on the banks of the Hillsborough River.  Don’t forget to bring your own picnic basket, chairs, blankets and coolers and enjoy the day. A limited number of tables are available throughout the park.
