Thanksgiving Donations Desperately Needed in Tampa Bay

By Laura Byrne

Friday, November 20 UPDATE from Metropolitan Ministries:

  • So far, Metropolitan Ministries has purchased $600,000 in food to serve families in need.
  • This is already 3X more than the entire holiday season last year.
  • We are still experiencing a shortfall of nonperishable food donations.
  • Stuffing, yams, and cereal are the most needed items right now.
  • We are continuing to purchase what we can but aren’t able to access the large quantities we need (due to buying restrictions in this pandemic).
  • We are forecasting that the need will be 5X more by Christmas.
  • 100,000 toys are needed to make Christmas happen for children.
  • We are not even halfway there yet and are asking those who can, please join us in this effort.
  • We are thankful to all those who have donated.
  • Together, we can meet this need.

2020 has been an unprecedented year. There is no doubt about that. This year, need within our community is also reaching unprecedented levels.

With less than two weeks to go before Thanksgiving Day, Metropolitan Ministries says it has nowhere near the amount of food needed to assist local families.

They have 20,334 boxes to fill to provide a meal for a one family-it’s roughly the equivalent of 60 semi-truck trailers of food or more than 1 million pounds of food.

The most needed items include:

  • canned yams
  • stuffing
  • cranberry sauce
  • instant potatoes
  • canned fruit
  • turkeys

If you have some time this week, take the kids along for a shopping trip and let them pick out these desperately needed items. You can drop them off at the following Holiday Tent locations:

2609 N Rome Avenue, Tampa 33607

3214 US Highway 19 N, Holiday 34691

You can locate other drop-off locations near you here.
