Finding the Good in Local News | A local reporter’s mission to spread joy

While relaxing on a cabin porch in the hills of North Carolina, three-time Emmy-award winning television reporter Bobby Lewis clearly felt God plant a mission in his heart. It was time to remind people that GOOD NEWS is not extinct.

Finding Joy Beyond the Headlines“Usually, we associate newscasts with depressing stories and deflating reports,” says Lewis, who was born in St. Petersburg and lives in Seminole with his wife of nine years, Juslin, and their two children, Ava and Easton. “Fires, shootings and disasters pepper the headlines. Despite the disappointing outlook, there is reason to celebrate the many joyful moments all around us. They often feel hidden, but the good news is easy to find if you know where to look.”

A 10News WTSP feature reporter and Clearwater High and University of South Florida graduate, Lewis has been uncovering uplifting, feel-good stories for his daily human interest segment, “On The Road,” since 2014. He’s compiled 28 of those stories into his new book, “Finding Joy Beyond the Headlines.”

“I think good news ought to be in the news,” Lewis says. “The headlines are awful, but God is working in our media mess.”

Inspired by seeing God move in incredible ways in the lives of the people he’s interviewed, Lewis picked seven Biblical principles to unwrap in “Finding Joy Beyond the Headlines.” Each chapter highlights a different principle – love, joy, giving, ambition, blessing, thankfulness and perseverance – and shares a real news story from his travels. Each person featured exemplifies his or her chapter principle and shows how God can do amazing things in the lives of people who are seeking joy. You’ll feel connected to a child photography phenom, a WWII pilot and a colorblind landscaper. You’ll fall in love with an ageless mermaid, a Santa-in-training and even a cancer-defeating ‘Mr. Universe’.

One major distinction for Lewis’ book is the ability for readers to watch the original news segments for each character found within the pages. He’s compiled all the links for his stories at Hearing from the book subjects in their own words adds credibility to the miracles God performed in their lives. Website testimonials also help readers get to know the book subjects even better.

The book has been reviewed by Team USA Olympic Chaplain, Asif Shaikh, “Wheel of Fortune” co-host Vanna White, and 14-time author Jennifer Rothschild. The book was printed by WestBow Press and is available at

Negative headlines are not going away. Fortunately, neither is God. Embrace the joyful news all around you with Lewis’ new book, “Finding Joy Beyond The Headlines,” and watch more stories like the ones featured in the book weeknights on 10News WTSP at 5:30 p.m.
