Fun for the Frugal Family

Being frugal and having fun don’t have to be an oxymoron. The summer is a time to get out and reward your kids for the fruits of their scholastic labor, and there are plenty of fun and inexpensive ways to do that right in the Tampa Bay area.

1. AMF Bowling Summer Games

Weekdays from open to 6 p.m., parents can register their kids (ages 15 and under) for the summer games, which lets them enjoy three free games every weekday, all summer long. A family pass for four is only $39.95. Parents and kids can also enjoy a night out on $2 Tuesdays, with $2 games and $2 shoe rentals every Tuesday after 8 p.m.

2. Fort De Soto Beach

Summer is the perfect time to visit the beach, and what better beach than Fort De Soto? With calm surf, clean restrooms, nature trails, the fort’s historic remains to explore, and even a dog park, this beach is a perfect (and FREE) way to spend a summer day. Parents with smaller kids can also relax and enjoy the natural “kiddie” pool lagoon on the North beach, which never gets deeper than three feet.

3. The Glazer Children’s Museum

Enjoy a relaxing and fun day inside at the Glazer Children’s Museum. Admission is only $15 for adults, $9.50 for kids, and children under 1 are admitted for free. With over 170 “interactivities”, including the new National Park exhibit, Mount Rushmore exhibit, and even an interactive Roswell section, there is something for everyone.

4. “Screen on the Green” Summer Movie Series at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park

Movies start at dusk (around 8 p.m.) at the beautiful Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park downtown, and also feature short animation films before the movie. Food trucks and Kahwa coffee will be on-site. Dogs are also welcome at this event!
