Grandparent’s Day Craft and Gift Ideas

Don’t forget that Grandparent’s Day is Sunday, September 7! What better way to celebrate and show the grandparents in your life how much you care than by making them a wonderful homemade gift! Some of these gifts are fun to make with the grandparents too!

Silhouettes are a classic. We’ve modernized them a bit with some color and trendy prints like a gray/white chevron. To cut your own silhouette, take a profile picture of your child and print it out on regular printer paper. Place the paper on top of a paper of your choice. We picked a light gray to compliment the chevron background of our box frame. Simply cut around your child’s profile and glue to another paper of your choice and frame it! Simple and done! Paper: .79 cents each, Shadow Box Frame: $9.99 for three frames.

You can also paint a silhouette on to a wine glass. We picked up a sturdy wine glass at a dollar store and taped a profile picture of a child inside the glass and traced the profile with a fine paint brush and paint. Fill in the outline and your masterpiece is nearly complete! To seal the deal, place the glass in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes and then let cool inside the oven. Give the paint another 24 hours or so before washing the glass to ensure lasting power. Wine glass: $1.00, Paint: $1.99, Paint Brush: $4.99 for four pack of brushes.

Framed Pictures and Artwork

You can never go wrong with framing a favorite picture or your child’s most recent masterpiece. A large frame is great for the home, but consider adding a few very small frames for the work or home office desk. We love using shadow box frames to not only showcase the art, but the crayons used to create the scribble…tooth marks and all! You can also use a shadow box frame to show off a special moment like a child’s first visit to the beach and the first shells he or she collected. The sky is the limit! Frames: prices vary from $3.99 for small frames to $20 for the large frame.

We love how this project turned out! Pick up any white (or color if you prefer) ceramic coffee mug, plate or bowl and give your child a stack of colorful Sharpie markers. Younger children (not too young since we’re dealing with permanent markers here!) can draw a picture or write a word that describes their grandparent. Older children can write a favorite memory or favorite saying on the mug or bowl. Once the artwork is complete, bake the coffee mug, plate or bowl in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool in the oven and then remove. Coffee mug: $3.99, Sharpie markers: $10.99 for one back.

Hand Print Art
This one is fairly simple. All it requires is some non-toxic paint, a blank canvas, and a kid that is willing to get messy. Dip their hands in the paint and make hand prints, and then write something special around the borders with markers. You can also have your kids create something artistic if they would like by finger painting something they love about their grandparents. Paint and markers are inexpensive, and most canvases costs between $8 and $15.

Make a photo book
Photobooks are a great, and inexpensive, way to make the perfect gift for grandparents– especially if they live far away. Whether you decide to make a homemade scrapbook or a printed and bound photo book, grandparents are sure to love it. Check out for great photobook ideas and inspirations and to even create one. If you choose to make a regular scrapbook, stores like Michael’s and Joanne Fabrics have excellent scrapbook pages to decorate with. You can also print some scrap book pages out here!

All you need is 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of flour, and 1/2 cup of water. Mix the salt, water, and flour to create a dough. Keep mixing it until it is thick. Roll it into a ball, and then roll it flat onto a cookie sheet. Kids will love making this one. You can add food coloring as well if you want to add a little something extra. Have your kids put their hand prints in the dough, and then bake it at 200 degrees for about 2 hours. Make sure to poke a hole in the dough before you put it in the oven with a straw so that you can put ribbon through it to hang it! You can also let your kids make some sculptures with the dough adding beads and more. When it is done baking and cooling, have your kids paint it if they would like, add some ribbon to hang it, and voila! The perfect present.

Wearable Art

Grandma will love showing off her artwork pendant and Grandpa will treasure his personalized cuff links created by their beloved grandchildren. We found bezels and cuff links at the craft store and cut the child’s artwork to size, sealed the paper with packing tape and then glued it inside the bezel and cuff links. We finished it off with a coat of Mod Podge Dimensional Magic and let it dry for 24 hours. The Dimensional Magic dries clear, creating an enamel like surface. Simply beautiful! You can also use a picture if you prefer. Bezel: $3.99 for two, Cuff links: $3.99, Mod Podge glue: $4.99, Mod Podge Dimensional Magic: $5.99. Necklace: $3.99 for three black nylon strands.

Invite them for a family dinner!

To celebrate, time together is always the best gift. You can have the kids help you cook and set the tale, and you can even have them pair or draw a picture to use as place cards. When dinner is over, have the kids put on a play about the things they love about their grandparents, or maybe help them sing a song to their grandparents.  No matter how old your kids are, this will be one of the best gifts of all.
