How to Turn an Internship Into a Job: Asking Your Boss

You’ve done the internship and you know you did a great job. Now it’s the end and you want more from this dream company. So, how do you turn that internship into a job offer?

  1. Before talking to the big boss, ask around to find out which employees used to be interns. Learn their stories and any tips they have to offer. Besides, a bit of networking doesn’t hurt, especially if the coworkers have good things to report back to the boss about you.
  2. Stay on their radar. A position may not be available at the time your internship ends. Ask if there are any additional workshop or seminars you can attend to place you above any future candidates. Leave a good impression with a Thank You note, according to Forbes.
  3. Simply ask about any open job positions, part- or full-time. Most companies do not publicly post every job offer but reach out to their connections instead to fill that position. It really matters who you know in the industry. So, talk to a manager, your supervisor, or someone in human resources. Also, part-time jobs are great ways to earn cash and graduate with a job, especially if you have a few more semesters to go, according to Quint Careers.
  4. Do not hold back. Express your goals for working for the company; it won’t sound corny. Employers want to hire someone who is passionate about their mission statement.
  5. Pitch an idea that will make your company need you and only you to execute that project. This could add leverage to your future employer working out a deal with you.

Internships are a very important component to grow a career for college students these days. They build connections and experience. It doesn’t have to turn into a career but a reference could really boost your child’s chance to take on jobs at other companies.

We hope this helps you, your child, your nephew, your step sister, and more. If you have any tips to add to this list, please let us know in the comments!
