Local Boarding School: Great Option During Uncertain Times

When COVID-19 became a global pandemic, dining room tables became desks and laptops became classrooms as families worldwide adapted to a virtual school setting.

With the possibility of another surge in the virus and more stay-at-home orders, private day and boarding schools offer a unique option for families. For Tampa Bay families, that’s Admiral Farragut Academy, the leading boarding school on Florida’s west coast.

Farragut boarders can live on campus during the week or all school year. Five-day boarders go home on the weekends. Seven-day boarders live full time on campus. (Meanwhile, Farragut also has traditional day students.)

Families appreciate Farragut’s precautions and its perks.

Because Farragut has full-time medical and boarding staff, boarding students are tested for COVID-19 upon arrival, and regularly monitored. The school also has medical isolation dorm rooms available when needed.

In the event of another stay-at-home order, parents of boarding students don’t have to sacrifice their children’s socialization for home-bound confinement. Boarding students can safely remain on campus with their friends. Their learning will continue — a hybrid approach of virtual teaching from our faculty and in-person help from our full-time Residential Life Instructors.

Meanwhile, Farragut’s 40-acre campus offers boarders an in-ground pool, access to the waterfront (including sail boats, kayaks and paddle boards), use of modern athletic facilities, outdoor spaces under a canopy of shade trees, and an indoor hangout lounge just for them.

In addition (and during all times, not just stay-at-home orders) Farragut has a number of safety measures in place such as: germicidal UV lighting in the central air system; sanitization stations; requirement of face masks and social distancing; upper school block scheduling; outdoor classes during cooler weather; daily symptom and temperature checks; and pre-packaged meals in single-use food containers.

As a community, Farragut is excited that our campus is open and continuing to provide an all-inclusive experience to families seeking in-person schooling during this “new normal.”

Besides being Tampa Bay’s only boarding school, Farragut offers an aviation program, a full scuba curriculum, hands-on marine science, advanced engineering, AP courses, the prestigious AP Capstone program (which compares to IB), visual arts and music classes and military-inspired leadership training.

Our Admissions Team offers virtual meetings and tours as well as individualized on-campus tours and student shadows. Besides the boarding option, Farragut has a Prek-7 day school and the option for day school in grades 8-12.

With Farragut you can’t go wrong. The school won the Tampa Bay Times People’s Choice Best of the Best in 2019 and 2020 for Best Private School for Preschool, Best Private School for Grade/Middle School and Best Private School for High School.

With a 92% retention rate and limited space, the time is now to begin your search for the 2021-22 school year. You also can email us at to learn which grades are still accepting students for this school year.

We encourage you to learn more online at or follow us on social media. #WeAreFarragut!
