The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall offers a variety of classes, workshops and private lessons to all ages, providing them with the opportunity to explore their talents, discover new friends and learn from professional arts instructors for those age five and up. Classes begin January 13 and end the week of April 6 with the exception of Dance classes, which will end on April 13. Enrollment is now open for spring classes along with rolling admission throughout the semester.

Classes and amenities that are offered include private lessons for students who wish to strengthen their performance skills, instrumental jazz, band, choir, musical theatre, on-camera, dance and drama. New classes will continue to be added throughout the term.

Each class has an end of the semester performance to showcase the skills they learned throughout the course. Auditions for instrumental jazz and choir is required.

The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts is known for setting the standard of jazz education in the Tampa Bay area. The program includes Theory/Improvisation Lab, Big Band I and II and Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo students from four surrounding counties. Many alumni study in the country’s top music schools; including Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music.

Whether you have spent your life dedicated to music or you only sing in the shower, if you enjoy singing, there is a choir for you! This year, new groups have been added to match every skill level for the Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus and Show Choir. Come experience the joy of singing and community building with vocalists from around Pinellas County. With more than forty years of tradition, the Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus is the official adult Chorus of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Chorus members can look forward to performing a variety of musical styles and genres, in addition to potential performance opportunities outside of the class. Ruth Eckerd Hall’s repertoire includes popular, traditional, Broadway and concert literature that is fun to sing and gives an opportunity for members to learn and grow as musicians.

Another selection of classes offered are in Musical Theater. Students will work with master instructors in dance, music and theater to develop themselves into a true triple threat. Sections are available for multiple age levels, including beginner and advanced. Their work will culminate with a Ruth Eckerd Hall performance, a fully produced event showcasing all levels.

For those who are looking for the next level of dance training, students accepted will receive more intensive, career driven training from instructor Chris Liddell. Dance classes available in tap are open for all age levels and adults are not only welcomed, but encouraged. In addition, beginner’s ballet is available, giving adults the chance to try a new hobby.

Another program offered are Drama classes where participants will be privy to behind the scenes of our resident theater company, Hat Trick Theatre Productions. Classes available include Drama 1 (Setting the Stage), Drama 2 (Building Characters), Drama 3 (Story Creation) and Drama 4 (Spotlighting Scene Work & Monologues). Course work will be showcased at the end of the semester.

On-camera acting classes are also offered where there will be opportunities to work in commercials, film and television in the Southeast region. Adult on-camera acting is also available, which is catered toward beginners and for those already working in the TV/film industry. The overall focus of these on-camera acting programs is developing and improving skills, creating a better understanding of the business and preparing students to work professionally.
