The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts: Spring Classes

Kick off the new year with Spring classes at The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall! There’s a class for individuals of all ages and experience levels. Come explore your talents in Dance, Drama, Technical Theater, On-Camera Acting and much more! Classes begin on January 16 and are enrolling now.

Many returning favorites as well as new classes are offered this Spring, don’t miss out! There are classes for everyone.

Dance 1 – Whether you love to act on stage or just want to be fit and fun, students ages 6-12 will love this class! Class begins with reviewing basic and essential dance skills like rhythm, coordination, strength, flexibility, and personality. Then comes the fun when students work on Ballet, Jazz, and Tap basics catered to the individual students’ progress.

Stage Combat 2 (Armed and Single Sword) – Have you ever wondered how staged combat scenes work? Students ages 13-18 will be safely introduced to the world of armed combat, learning how to attack, defend and create their own scene!

Costume & Makeup Design and Scenic & Lighting Design – The show couldn’t go on without the magic that happens behind the scenes. New technical classes Costume & Makeup Design and Scenic & Lighting Design are offered for students ages 13-18. This class is perfect for those who wish to become well versed in all aspects of theater. Students enrolled in technical classes will receive the opportunity to work on shows put on by Hat Trick Theatre Productions, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s resident professional theater company.

Clearwater Chorus – Students ages 19 and up will experience the joy of singing and community building with vocalists from around Pinellas County. With more than forty years of tradition, the Clearwater Chorus is the official adult Chorus of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Chorus Members can look forward to performing a variety of musical styles and genres.

Instrumental Jazz – The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts is known for setting the standard of jazz education in the Tampa Bay Area. The Instrumental Jazz program includes students from four surrounding counties, with many alumni studying in our country’s top music schools; including Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. The Jazz Track is sponsored in part by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation. Students ages 12-19 can audition and will be placed appropriately.

Musical Theater Track – Students ages 8 to 13 will work with master instructors in Dance, Music, and Theater to develop themselves into a true triple threat. Their work will culminate in the Ruth Eckerd Hall Spring Cabaret, a fully produced event showcasing all levels.

Adult On-Camera ActingAdults are not left out! Individuals ages 18 and up will learn about auditions, character development, scene development, camera technique, memorization techniques, overcoming nerves and much more! This class is for “newbies” and those already working in the TV/film industry; for anyone seeking a deeper connection to their roles and a higher level of work.  Our overall focus is on developing and improving skills, creating a better understanding of the business, and preparing students to work professionally.
