Tampa, Florida –Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry is unveiling plans for a major new exhibit that will bring guests face-to-face with the future, giving them access to new technology from a builder of connected communities, a worldwide communications leader, a pioneering drone company, a driverless car maker, and more long before those innovations are released to the public.
When the new exhibit opens this fall, visitors will walk through a tunnel full of floating questions, and then emerge to face interactive displays from five partner organizations. Each display will showcase a different innovative development happening right now in Tampa Bay, Florida, or the U.S. that is on the verge of transforming our lives. It’s an experience guests can only see – and touch – at MOSI.
Four of MOSI’s cutting-edge partners are listed below. The fifth partner, and the exhibit’s name, will be released at a future date.
- Metro Development Group, a Tampa-based developer incorporating 1-Gigabit internet speeds into its communities with exclusive ULTRAFi technologyand the first to bring Crystal Lagoons to the U.S. with four planned in West Central Florida. With their latest endeavor in Pasco County, Metro has earned the prestigious distinction as the First Smart Gigabit Community in the country.
- Verizon, one of the largest communication technology companies in the world, operates America’s largest 4G LTE wireless network and the nation’s premiere all-fiber broadband network.
- Turin Aviation, a Tampa-based pioneer in unmanned aerial drone technology, specializes in the amazing field of non-military uses for drones, including construction, agriculture, search and rescue, and more.
- Meridian, a builder of autonomous vehicles, will expand its partnership with MOSI into this new exhibit, exploring how driverless cars will change the way we live; the company’s Meridian Shuttle is currently in use at MOSI as the only driverless car in America that is open to the public.
The partnerships between these technology innovators and MOSI are also revolutionary. While it is a permanent upgrade to MOSI, the exhibit’s content will never go out-of-date; the partners will provide multiple updates throughout the year. Guests will also be able to share their ideas and questions with the partners, so feedback from MOSI’s guests will help drive the development of these new technologies.
The new exhibit amplifies MOSI’s role as a beacon for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning by showing 500,000 visitors a year the power of STEAM skills at work and by highlighting the vital connections between education, the technology sector, and the general public.
The new exhibit will fill nearly MOSI’s entire second floor, replacing the aging Disasterville. Internationally acclaimed experience creator Optimus Medina Riley is designing and constructing the exhibit, while powerhouse digital experts Monster Media are developing the interactive content alongside MOSI’s partners. Paid for in part by a $2.5 million grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and private donations, the exhibit is part of more than $5.5 million in exhibit and technology upgrades coming to MOSI this year.
“While MOSI has started planning to relocate to Downtown Tampa, we’re not going anywhere for three to five years. As we plan our transition, we remain committed to bringing unique exhibits to MOSI and offering our guests new experiences,” MOSI President and CEO Molly Demeulenaere said.
