Pack a Punch in Your Child’s Lunch

School is back in session in just a matter of days, and while thinking about what to pack for lunch for the kids may seem routine, it can actually be one of the most important things to consider.

Nearly 18% of American children are obese according to the CDC– that’s up from 7% in 1980. ShopWell, leading nutritional app, thinks what’s in their lunchbox is to blame. The company found that the average student’s lunchbox in America packs a whopping:

  • 32 grams of fat
  • 47 grams of sugar
  • 112 grams of carbohydrates
  • 775 calories

Instead of packing junk food and cookies, consider packing healthier alternatives. If your child has a sweet tooth, pack some fruits like apples and strawberries. Bananas are also a very filling option to keep the kids from getting overly hungry between lunch and snack time. Whole wheat crackers or pretzels are a great alternative to chips, and crunchy veggies like carrots satisfy the need to munch instead of chips. Remember: if you are trying to teach the kids how to eat healthy, show them how to pack their lunch and discuss what they should include or leave out.
