Patel Conservatory offers classes for homeschoolers

To meet the demand for high quality performing arts homeschool classes, the Patel Conservatory has expanded offerings for the 2018-19 school year!

Patel Classes Include:

American Musical Theater, for those aged seven to 17, offers students an overview of musical theater from historical and performance perspectives. Students explore examples of American musical theater pieces, as well as musical, theatrical and dance styles from throughout the 20th century. This performance-based class culminates in an end-of-course showcase. Students are divided by age and skill-appropriate work groups. Class time for American Musical Theater is 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Theater 1, for those aged seven to 17, allows students to explore basic performance and technical theatrical studies with the goal of preparing, staging and presenting a classroom showcase of a scripted one-act play. Students are divided by age and skill-appropriate work groups. Class time for Theater 1 is Wednesdays, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Young Performing Arts, for those aged three to six, engages students in a sampler of movement, music, theater games and art activities, while building confidence and enthusiasm as students collaborate and explore the performing arts. Options for class times, both on Wednesdays, include 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or a three-hour block from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Beginning Piano, for those ages seven to 17, is designed for the beginner who will explore note reading, piano fundamentals and creative improvisation in this engaging group piano class. Class time is Wednesdays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Beginning Violin, for those aged seven to 17, is a fun, exploratory class for beginners who will learn the basics of violin technique. This class is held Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Intermediate/Advanced Violin, for students with violin experience aged nine to 17, will continue group violin study by providing exploration of intermediate string technique and repertoire. Classes are Wednesdays from 1 to 2 p.m.

Beginning Percussion, for students ages seven to 10, allows students to explore the percussion family of instruments, including xylophones, drum set, and djembe by playing music from around the world. Classes are Wednesdays from 1 to 2 p.m.

Percussion Ensemble, for those ages 10 to 17, allows children with drumming experience to explore performing as a percussion ensemble. This group reads and performs percussion ensemble literature and works on group improvisation. Classes are held Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Chorus, for those aged seven to 17, pairs general music training with chorus skills. Students practice healthy singing and develop musical expression through exciting repertoire selected to develop ensemble and solo singing techniques. Chorus is taught on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Youth Tap Dance, for those ages eight to 10, introduces children to the basic steps and rhythms of tap dance and works through combinations that students will find both challenging and fun. Classes are held Wednesdays 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

New this year are:

Endurance Training for the Stage, for those aged 10 to 18, uses the basic elements of jazz and contemporary dance to train students in a variety of warm-ups, and to increase range of motion, strength, endurance, agility, coordination, stability and spacial awareness important for the stage. Classes are held Wednesdays from 2 to 2:45 p.m.

Broadway Buddies, for those aged 10 to 13, pairs homeschool students with students in Pepin Academy’s middle school theater class as they attend numerous performances together. For Pepin Academies students, this class is the second part of an outreach. In the first, these students focus on the application of social skills and audience etiquette through theater-based activities. The Broadway Buddies course culminates in the development of a social story video that will be shared with Straz Center audiences. Classes are held Tuesdays from 9 to 11:45 a.m.

One-Act Workshops, for those aged eight to 13, helps students refine acting and production skills in preparation for presenting a one-act play at the Florida Theatre Conference in Gainesville, FL. Participation fee includes all festival and production related costs, including a two-night hotel stay. Meals and transportation not included in the cost. Classes are, for elementary students, on Tuesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and for middle school students, Tuesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Music Appreciation, for those aged 10 to 17, will explore the inner workings of the world of music through listening and hands-on learning. The class is divided into units covering the elements of music, music acoustics, western music history, music of the world and American music. Classes are held Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
