The Perks of Being a Grandparent

Being a grandparent can be a tough adjustment. Naturally, you might have a tough transition from parent to grandparent, but there are some perks to being a grandparent. Here are the perks that will make you 100% glad to be a grandparent.

1. You get to see your kids endure the torture that they put you through. This is quite possibly the best perk. You love your kids, they were perfect angels, except the times that they weren’t. Every time your daughter “sassed” you, or any time your son tried to sneak candy bars or toys into the grocery cart, you knew that all you had to do was wait for the day to come that their kids would do it to them. If you had an especially headstrong child, you know that their child will probably be just as willful, and you get to see your kids come to the realization that they should have been more appreciative of your parenting. It is kind of like the circle of life, but the circle of tantrums and appreciation.

2. You get to spoil the kids and send them home. Spending time with your grandchildren is the most special time in the world, and you get the luxury of taking them to fun places, nice restaurants, or showering them with gifts and then sending them home to mom just before they start to get cranky. You get the perk of sleeping at night without hearing “MOMMY! DADDY!” coming from somewhere in your house at 2 a.m., but you still get the fun parts of the day with them. You also get unconditional love with unconditional sleep. It is a rarity that is earned by being a grandparent.

3. You are no longer in charge of a child. This might seem like a tough adjustment, but once you come to realize that you are no longer in charge of picking schools, figuring out what the heck gluten is, and debating the right type of rice cereal to start a baby on, you can relax a little bit more. You will get the perks of spending time with a wonderful little person and getting to know someone completely from birth without having to be responsible for every little thing in their lives. And again, you will get all of these perks PLUS a full night’s sleep. It is a beautiful thing.

4. You get to teach them useful things. When I was a little girl, my grandmother taught me how to crochet, sew, cook, garden, you name it. My grandfather taught me how to take care of a car and climb a tree. This is now your time to impart some knowledge to the next generation. When you teach your grandkids things, you are not only knowing that you are teaching them something but you are building your relationship with them. It will become something they never forget, and you will love making memories with them too. Best of all, you know that if you are the one who taught them the skill, they learned it the right way.

5. You get to strengthen your bonds with family. After years of questioning yourself and wondering if you were raising your kids right, you finally have confirmation that yes, you did raise them right, and you are now the one that everyone comes to for advice. Your kids will have a new respect for you and you will become the one to carve the turkey at Thanksgiving. Your grandkids will call you and come to your house and give you hugs and kisses. Being a grandparent is one of the best things in the world, and the biggest perk is that you get to experience new bonds and unconditional love.
