Picnic in the Park: Henry B. Plant Museum

Roll back the clock a century and join us for an old-fashioned picnic in the park on Sunday, March 8th, starting at 11 am, in Plant Park. Bring your blanket, pack a picnic basket and invite family and friends to experience the pleasures of a simpler time. Relax in the shade, or test your Victorian sporting prowess with challenges of hoops & sticks, croquet, horseshoes, badminton, and three-legged races. Victorian table games will be offered including dominoes, checkers, jacks and tiddlywinks. We’ll have strolling models in vintage clothing, live theater, and continuous entertainment on Center Stage.

Blue Bell Ice Cream will provide complimentary ice cream.  Food trucks Dave’s Jukebox Diner and Mr. C’s Grilled Cheese, from Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally, will have food available for purchase.  Complimentary popcorn courtesy of the Museum.

In addition to live entertainment, community partners will offer crafts and activities.  The Humane Society of Tampa Bay will be present at a table with some friendly dogs looking for a forever home.  Visitors will be able to interact with the dogs.  The Paper Seahorse will host Victorian paper-crafting and offer visitors a chance to type on a vintage typewriter.  Join Arts4All Florida in an art activity accessible to all.  Interplay Space will provide an opportunity for visitors to create art with nature.  Try your hand at sketching and plein-air painting with Tampa Regional Artists. Enjoy train rides with the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum.  Professor Gusto will be strolling the park to share in picnic participation and platitudes.  Towering above picnickers will be a stilt walker, a veritable giant at over 9 feet tall!

Picnic in the Park is a perfect opportunity to lull in a haven of rest and contentment on the banks of the Hillsborough River.  Bring your own picnic basket, chairs, blankets and coolers and enjoy the day.  A limited number of picnic tables are available for a $20 fee.

Step back in time and encounter what life was like at the former Tampa Bay Hotel with a special $1 admission at the Henry B. Plant Museum from noon-5 pm.

The Henry Plant Museum interprets the turn-of-the-century Tampa Bay Hotel and the lifestyles of America’s Gilded Age.  Critical to the success of this mission is the restoration and preservation of this National Historic Landmark, an opulent 1891 railroad resort, and the artifacts significant to its history, and the life and work of Henry Bradley Plant.  The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday, noon to 5 pm.  Closed Mondays and select other dates.  Admission is $10 per adult, $7 for seniors (65 yrs.), $7 for students and $5 for children 4 – 12 yrs. Museum members free.
