A case for prenatal massage

Pregnancy is an exciting time of anticipation for a growing family and bonding between mother and an unborn child. Although adapting to pregnancy might sometimes be difficult, our team understands that this time is important and memorable for your family. That is why we do our best to help you both stay healthy and happy through massage, acupuncture and other therapies. 

There has been conflicting advice as to whether a massage in your first trimester is safe. Some doctors will advise a mother to avoid massage their first trimester because of the elevated chance of a miscarriage before 10 weeks. Other doctors disagree, stating that there is no supporting evidence that pregnancy massage during the first trimester is harmful and therefore, as long as you do not have any existing risk factors, it is your choice. It is important to speak to your doctor before receiving a massage to learn if any risk factors apply to you.  

Pregnancy massage for expectant mothers has many pre and post-natal health benefits.  

Studies show that pregnancy massage can:  

  • Reduce anxiety 
  • Improve mood 
  • Regulate hormones 
  • Improve sleep 
  • Relieve muscle or joint pain 
  • Decrease hip or sciatic nerve pain 
  • Improve gastrointestinal disturbances 
  • Decrease the likelihood of complications 
  • Prevent early labor 

During pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin loosens joints and ligaments in the body, preparing the hips for birthing. As the hips begin to tilt forward and center of gravity changes in later weeks, this hormone creates instability which can often be the culprit for ailments such as lower back pain, sciatic pain and feet getting wider.

Massage helps you get through the physically trying times during your pregnancy so that you can enjoy these moments with your family in stress-free anticipation. During your massage gentle stretching may help alleviate ailments discussed above. 

It is important to feel comfortable through your massage session. After about 12 weeks, our massage therapists will transition you to either our popular prenatal pillows that are especially designed for your personal comfort or left-side lying position. The reason for this is to remove unwanted stress to the low back, abdomen, uterine structures and your unborn child. It is important to know that a specially trained massage therapist recognizes acupressure and reflexology points during pregnancy massage. In developmental stages, massage helps your baby grow healthy tissue and circulation to reduce further complications.
