Painting goes a long way. Make it all black for a scary effect or even create fake-carving marks with black sharpie when the detail is too small and hard to carve.
The Scenic Route
Pumpkins do not have to have a face carved into them. Take advantage of the creepy candle effect and do an equivalent spooky scene.
