Recharge, Rejuvenate

Vacations in Mexico

Seeking an escape from the stress of everyday life? I recently discovered the ultimate refuge at the newly renovated Viceroy Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your partner or a spa retreat with a handful of your best friends, this is the seaside haven for adults to recharge their batteries.

The moment you arrive in the open-air lobby, which is without any kind of check-in desk or walls, you immediately realize this is not going to be the run-of-the mill hotel experience. The resort manager greets you with an iced hand towel and a cool Mayan cocktail. He then personally guides you along a winding stone path through a lush jungle, offering a tour of all that the oceanfront Viceroy has to offer. To begin your stay, you are treated to a Mayan blessing ritual of Copal incense at the Wayak, the Viceroy’s sensual spa. The sacred smoke floats around your body and is said to purify and cleanse your spirit. It also dissolves the last bits of city stress or travel fatigue you may have brought with you. The scent of Copal becomes pleasantly familiar as it is used throughout the resort.

The Viceroy recently was renovated and now hosts 41 exquisite jungle and ocean view private villas, each with over 1,000 square feet of beautiful living space nestled in tropical foliage. Combining the natural elements of stone, mahogany and palm, the villa’s decor gives you the primal feeling that you are outdoors but with all of the creature comforts.  Every structure on the property was designed with the influence of ancient Mayan cultures, complete with circular architecture and soaring thatched Palapa ceilings in the villas, the spa and even the cabanas on the beach.  Each villa comes with its own outdoor living room with crocheted hammocks and a private plunge pool.  When you walk into the newly renovated bathroom, it actually takes your breath away.  Mostly enclosed by only glass walls, this oversized luxurious bath offers an indoor shower and deep soaking tub in addition to a lush atrium with a private outdoor shower.  This is a seriously decadent bath experience.

The Wayak Spa is a slice of Zen heaven, offering a myriad of massage therapies, spa treatments and Mayan rituals to indulge your every sensory whim. The circular spa has a tranquil candlelit Jacuzzi area and stone steam room to enjoy before and after your treatments. The Holistic Massage is an incredible mingling of exquisite essential oils with deep tissue massage and reflexology. I had this treatment at dusk in a softly draped outdoor room bordering the rainforest, my relaxation enhanced by the calls of exotic birds and monkeys. They can also arrange to have your services performed on the ocean pier overlooking the Caribbean. The spa therapists are exemplary in meeting your every expectation. You will leave the Wayak with all tensions dissolved from your body and spirit.

The resort has two oceanfront restaurants with fabulous cuisine. The casual beachside Coral Grill & Bar and the intimate La Marea loft restaurant both offer menu selections with unusual and artistic combinations. Interesting twists on the usual cocktail abound at the beachside bar. The Viceroy offers a unique dine anywhere policy, which doesn’t really hit home until you have a gourmet meal with a few signature margaritas delivered to the ocean pier at sunset. Fine dining with your feet dangling over the ocean is definitely an amenity!

One excursion that you don’t want to miss is a visit to nearby Xcaret, an incredible archaeological park located only 20 minutes from the Viceroy. Mother Nature at her finest, Xcaret is a 200-acre expanse of ocean inlets and underground rivers opening into the Caribbean Sea. The rivers of the Yucatan Peninsula flow into Xcaret, making the water incredibly bright and clear. The park offers more than 40 attractions, including snorkeling through sparkling rivers and mangroves, swimming with dolphins and sharks, a butterfly pavilion and coral reef aquarium. Everything is mingled with ancient Mayan history and culture. When evening comes, don’t miss the huge Xcaret Night Show, a festival highlighting the music and history of Mexican traditions. There are no words to describe this breathtaking mystical place.

If you’re looking to enjoy the local nightlife, Playa del Carmen has lots of hot spots and is only a few minutes away. Among many other on-site amenities, the resort offers yoga classes, an oceanfront workout facility, a gift shop and Mayan cooking classes.

The beauty is in the details at the Viceroy Riviera Maya, from the incredibly friendly and attentive staff to the rich detail in the natural décor of the villas and resort. Imagine the look and feel of a pristine and beautiful deserted island, only it comes with every spa amenity, culinary delights and five-star service. This is no Gilligan’s Island.
