Stress relieving tips for holiday travelers

If you are planning a holiday getaway, avoiding holiday weight gain and stress might seem like a sugar plum dream but it is possible.  Follow these six easy health and fitness tips and you’ll be ringing in the New Year with a smile.

Holiday travel tips

1.   Take five to stretch.Take five minutes to stretch your muscles while you wait at the airport or during a road trip pit stop.  Doing basic stretches for your shoulders, neck, legs and spine will increase your circulation and allow your muscles to relieve tension and relax. When you arrive and settle in, take another five another minutes to stretch your muscles.

2.   Work up a sweat.

Increase your heart rate (not by stress, but by exercise) by maintaining a basic exercise routine while you are traveling, even if you only exercise for 15 minutes a day.

3.   Breathe.

Upon waking up or before going to bed, do 10 rounds of diaphragmatic breathing. Sitting up straight, inhale, expand the belly out like a balloon and exhale, draw the belly in towards the spine.  Be patient and breathe slowly.  It takes practice but it is worth it.

4.   Stay hydrated and eat healthy.

Eating healthy is personal.  Listen to your body and choose foods that are grounding and easy to digest  Warm foods help ground the body like soups, steamed or sauteed vegetables, rice, pastas, etc.  Eating healthy is important for energy, productivity and efficiency.

Holiday festivities sometimes include a glass of wine, scotch, or some other form of cocktail.  Drink plenty of water throughout the day while you are traveling especially between cocktails.

5.   Get a little pampered

If you are staying at a hotel, indulge in the hotel’s amenities or check out nearby businesses that offer pampering treatments.  A massage, playing golf, mani/pedi, anything that helps you relax.  These special treats will help you clear  your mind and stay balanced.

6.   Have FUN!

What’s the point in traveling if you can’t have some fun while you’re at it? Always make time for fun!
