Explore and Engage Through STEAM Learning

A group of 3-year-olds brush gold paint across a giant canvas. Nearby, a cluster of new kindergarten friends grind fresh herbs with a mortar and pestle. The adjacent classrooms are full of similar scenes – children engaged in playful learning alongside expert teachers. It’s a school setting, but it’s a Saturday, and the children are begging to go to school.

The scene is one of many at STEAMakers, an annual community event for toddlers through fourth graders. For the third year, the STEAMakers Open House offers families of young children a free event that allows children to experience Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math activities designed just for them.

The event is hosted by the innovative faculty of the Experiential and Lower Schools at Shorecrest Preparatory School, the number one school for STEM in St. Petersburg according to At Shorecrest, the popular acronym includes a fifth letter – “A” – for Art, to make STEAM. Engaging in STEAM subjects supports creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

In addition to STEAMakers, Shorecrest has also sponsored and hosted St. Pete STEAMfest since its inception in 2016. The outdoor festival features robotics demonstrations, arts and crafts, design and engineering challenges, mad scientist games, coding apps and more.

“STEAM subjects and projects are a part of what we do every day at Shorecrest,” says Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology. “We launched STEAMakers and STEAMfest as ways of sharing engaging, experiential learning with the greater community.”

STEAMakers is on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Shorecrest Preparatory School, 5101 1st St. N.E., St. Petersburg.

The free event is open to the public with registration. Families interested in learning more about The Experiential School (3, 4, and 5-year-old program) and Lower School (Kindergarten-fourth grade) at Shorecrest may take advantage of an info session and campus tour while at the event.
