Super Dad Mike Lewis

Mike Lewis 1Born in Dunedin and raised in New Port Richey, Mike Lewis met wife Jenn in high school, marrying her four years after their graduation. They now have two beautiful girls, Gracyn Kenzie, 2, and Lola Eloise, 4 months. They were born the same day two years apart! A nurse, Lewis is working toward becoming a physical therapist.

What is the most rewarding part of being a dad?

Watching my daughters grow and learn is so amazing. The simplest thing like learning to roll over and learning to hold the bottle themselves is so awesome. Not to mention the first time Gracyn said, “I love you, Dada!”

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids?

Just spending time and playing with them is so much fun — anything from chasing Gracyn around the house or swimming in the pool to floor time with Lola.

What is the most challenging part of fatherhood?

Being the father of two girls, this I feel is still to come for me. I pray about this every night. I hope to teach my daughters that they are valuable. I hope to teach them the difference between a boy who lusts and a boy who loves. I hope to show them these things by how I treat and love my wife.

Who influenced the kind of father you are?

Unquestionably, that would be my own father Kenneth Lewis. He showed me things that you can’t just learn — humility, patience, perseverance and hard work. He is a great dad and an awesome Pop Pop!

As a father, how do you view your responsibilities?

Making sure my daughters are safe and taken care of is my responsibility.

What advice would you give other fathers?

The other day Gracyn decided it would be a good idea to wash her hair with her yogurt! I was upset at first but quickly laughed about it and took some pictures. I would tell other fathers to realize that these moments are memories that you are making with your children. Should you get upset and yell or laugh about it and give her a bath?

It is often difficult to balance a career with spending time with your family. How do you deal with this and make time for them?

When school starts again, it will be harder to have the time that I do now. Options like online classes are helpful to be home with family and still be able to continue my education.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I love to cook — breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s just the cleaning up that I don’t like so much!

What is your biggest fear?

My girls are still innocent and don’t know about the sometimes cruel world we live in. It is scary to think about just how much has changed even since I was in school. Unfortunately, I can only shield my girls from the world for so long.

What makes you happy?

The blessing of being a father and husband is what makes me happiest. Simply spending time at home with my family is enough.

Where is your favorite place to go in Tampa?

We recently visited the Glazer Children’s Museum for the first time and really enjoyed it. Also, Gracyn enjoys seeing and learning about animals so I believe a trip to Lowry Park Zoo and the Florida Aquarium is in our future!
