The Gifts My Library Gives to Me

December is a month of presents, holiday travels and family time. Check out your public library for gifts the whole family can share all year long! 

No Late Fines: Hillsborough County public libraries no longer charge late fines on materials that are overdue. The library encourages open access for all and would rather you Just Bring it Back! Learn more about our fine free initiative: https://www.hcplc.org/books/bring-it-back

Discovery Pass: Reserve a free admission or pass and be a tourist in your hometown! This program encourages all residents of Hillsborough County to experience Tampa Bay’s many museums and attractions. Storytelling Workshops: Children in grades 1-5 are invited to learn how to tell folk and fairy tales through characterization, projection, movement and imagination. Workshops will begin in late January 2020 and are developed to help children love to learn the art of storytelling and boost their self- confidence and creativity. The culminating Storytelling Festival will be held April 25, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Public Library in Tampa. The 2020 Featured Teller is Orisirisi African Folklore, an awe-inspiring adventure rooted in African history, culture and traditions. Educational Kits and Models: Have a budding scientist on your hands? A future doctor? A kid who just wants to know how things work? The public library offers an extensive collection of real-life objects that children can use at home to make connections to their own lives as they try to make sense of new concepts and ideas.

Public Art: Seventeen Hillsborough County libraries are home to public art collections that provide unique insight to the exceptional individuality found in our community. Seven libraries also feature inspiring and engaging galleries for art admirers of all ages with rotating exhibits and opportunities to meet local artists. http://bit.ly/HCPLCArt2019

Passport Services and Travel Resources: Start your travel journey at the library! Four Hillsborough County libraries accept U.S. Passport applications by appointment. Plan your trip with eBooks and downloadable travel guides or learn phrases in over 70 languages with Mango Languages. For details visit https://hcplc.org/travel.  

Early Learning Hives: Grandma Claire’s Early Learning Hive at New Tampa Regional Library is a dedicated space for children to develop cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being skills through play. Early Learning Hives create engagement experiences for children and their families that promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concepts for early literacy through sensory toys, games and puzzles.
