How can tutoring help students that aren’t struggling?

Tutoring has obvious benefits for students who are struggling in school. But if your student is not struggling, why should you continue to have them enrolled in tutoring?

There are endless benefits to working with a tutor. The purpose of tutoring is to help students become independent learners, providing them with the skills needed to succeed in school. Tutoring gives students individualized attention that they don’t get in a crowded classroom. This helps children who struggle to keep up, as well as those who aren’t challenged enough. Tutoring also helps with improved work and study habits, increased confidence and attitude, or improved social and behavioral skills. Tutored students generally perform better on tests and attend school more regularly. It also keeps students on track during school breaks or the summer. Even if tutoring isn’t right for every student, almost any student can benefit from this effective way of learning.

Many schools have a variety of tutoring programs in place to help their students. The Center for Academic Success at Admiral Farragut Academy offers these programs for your student where they can get the help they need.

Reading Specialist

A full-time reading specialist is available to all students in the Lower School. A 2014 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that reading daily to young people can help with language acquisition and literacy skills. The study also discovered that more than one in three American children start kindergarten without the skills they need to learn to read. Therefore, Farragut strives to be proactive by incorporating programs through the Center for Academic Success to bring all of its students up to a level that instills confidence.

Weekly Project Planning

Upper School students may receive (no-charge) guidance once a week for planning the upcoming week’s study time to maximize results and ensure projects and assignments are completed accurately and on time.

Educational Testing

Educational testing may identify strengths and weaknesses which need to be addressed in the educational setting. The center offers educational testing that assists teachers and support staff as they develop an educational plan for your child.

Academic Coaching/Study Skills

This session is held during the academic day as an alternative elective class and limited to four students. Students are taught study habits and organizational skills that are necessary to maintain the high academic expectations of the Academy.

Individualized Reading Programs

Our staff of dedicated educators will tailor a reading program to meet the specific needs of your child. Lindamood-Bell® programs and multi-sensory methods are integrated with other proven reading improvement strategies to develop an individualized reading program.

One-to-One Tutoring

Students in need of tutoring in a specific academic subject area will be paired with a tutor with expertise in that area. The tutoring will occur after the academic day is completed.

Peer Tutoring

Students often just need a study buddy or assistance with note taking or lecture review. The peer-tutoring program offers students the opportunity to buddy up with someone from the same class or someone who has excelled in the subject area to assist the student as they master subject content.
