Winter Wonder Ride: Ride for a cause with Onbikes on December 9

This article was originally published in the December 2017 issue of Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine.

“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a kid a bike, and that’s pretty close.”

Do you remember receiving your first bike? Or the excitement and freedom you felt as a kid riding your bike down the street in the fresh air? At onbikes, the mission is to create that feeling of pure joy among kids in our community.

Onbikes is a nonprofit organization that builds and delivers new bicycles and helmets to local at-risk and foster children, primarily raising funds through an annual city-wide bike ride called The Winter Wonder Ride.

Onbikes was formed in 2011 when a group of friends organized a community bike ride during the winter holiday season to raise funds so at-risk kids could receive their very first bike. It has grown significantly since then, and Sarah Breseman, recently appointed executive director, intends to keep the momentum going. “I’m honored to have joined the onbikes team and look forward to helping further this amazing cause. Onbikes is truly special in that not only do we provide at-risk and foster kids with their very first brand new bike, but we offer a fun and unique way for our community to get involved. Everyone remembers the day they got their first bike. We believe every child deserves to have that moment and we aim to create that for as many kids in our community as possible.”

Since 2011, onbikes has built and donated over 3,500 bicycles to children in need while aiming to restore the self-confidence, health and overall well-being of those kids in our community.

The expressions on the children’s faces when they receive their bike is unforgettable, and though it may seem like a small gesture, it makes a very real difference in the world of a child.

There are two ways to get involved:  The annual bike build where hundreds of volunteers gather at Amalie Arena to put together new bikes that will be delivered to the kids, and the annual bike ride where thousands of people gather to celebrate the cause.

Each December, onbikes hosts a holiday-themed bike ride at Curtis Hixon Park where riders assemble dressed as snowmen, reindeer or elves to bike through downtown Tampa, cruise along beautiful Bayshore Boulevard and reconvene at the park for a post-ride celebration.

This year, the Dec 9 Winter Wonder Ride theme is “Ho! Ho! Ho!” So get your tickets, bikes and Santa hats ready.
